Foster Grandparent Program

FGP began locally in 1972. It is the older of the two senior service programs and forms a natural bridge between the young and old. The heart of the program is the one-on-one special attention Foster Grandparents provide. This special care helps young people grow, gain self-confidence, and become more fully interactive and productive members of society.

Foster Grandparents must be at least 60 years of age or older, income eligible, love children and be willing to volunteer 20 hours a week. Foster grandparents serve children with exceptional needs in a variety of settings: schools, shelter facilities, day care centers, head start programs, etc. They work with children who have been abused or neglected. FGP volunteers mentor troubled youth, young mothers and care for children with physical disabilities.

In return for volunteering, Foster Grandparents receive a small tax-free stipend to cover the cost of serving plus a transportation reimbursement, meals and supplemental accident and liability insurance.
