Mayor Abramson

Now in his second four-year term as mayor of Louisville Metro, Jerry E. Abramson believes that being a strong public leader is the best way to give back to the hometown he loves.

In the past five-and-a-half years, Mayor Abramson has taken bold steps to build a stronger and safer community and create a more efficient and responsive local government. He has led efforts to:

  • Increase safety through MetroSafe – a $70 million emergency communications network that, for the first time, links all community and regional emergency responders
  • Put more police officers on streets and neighborhoods than ever before and provide the tools they need to protect citizens
  • Accelerate a 21-year renaissance downtown with 4th Street Live!, the Muhammad Ali Center, new and renovated hotels, a tripling of housing at all price ranges, and work underway on a new riverfront arena and the Museum Plaza tower.
  • Launch the visionary "City of Parks" plan to add 4,000 acres of suburban park land and the 100-mile Louisville Loop trail encircling the community. It's one of the largest parks expansion projects in America.
  • Solve the most pressing drainage problems in the community with the $70 million Project DRI initiative targeting neighborhood drainage projects
  • Reduce the size of government by more than 10 percent while improving the delivery of basic services in key areas – all without raising taxes
  • Launch an ambitious effort to focus on economic redevelopment along major roadways throughout our community.
Abramson was named one of the “Public Officials of the Year” in 2003 by Governing magazine for his success with the largest city-county merger in 30 years.

In 2005, Abramson was named Kentucky’s best civic leader for the fifth time by Kentucky Monthly magazine.
